This web site is the W A Berry Class of 1969 web site. It is for everyone's enjoyment but primarily for those of the class of '69 and then the entire W A Berry family, both classmates and faculty. There were many from the '69 class that had siblings graduating before us and then after us. This site may be of interest to you.
W A Berry was first opened in 1959 as a Jefferson County elementary school designed to serve the "Over the Mountain" area of Jefferson County, Alabama. The "Over the Mountain" area is just that, south of Birmingham and over the mountain, Shades Mountain. After a few years it was decided that another elementary school, Green Valley Elementary would be built for the fast-growing area and Berry would gradually transition to a high school. So, in the mid ‘60’s Berry started dropping early grades of grammar school and adding early years of high school until Berry was high school only. In 1964 the 12th grade was added to Berry and that class of 1965 became the first graduating class of W A Berry. If your math is right, then you can quickly determine that our class of ’69 was the 5th class to graduate from W A Berry High School. Since Berry was transitioned from elementary to high school, some of our classmates started the 3rd grade at Berry and continued through the 12th.
If you are wondering, there were two Berry High Schools in the state of Alabama, but only one was W A Berry. The other Berry High School in Alabama is located in Berry, Alabama.
Now, enjoy the web site, look up old classmates and remember the numerous good times we had. Also, please keep your contact information updated.
